Eastern Sector Chairman Advocates Replacement of Partograph with Labour Care Guide for Management of Labour in Nigeria

The Sector chairman of Eastern SOGON, OUJ Umeora has advocated for taking labour management beyond the partograph. He made this call while presenting during the Presidential Session of the Ongoing SOGON 55th Annual Scientific Conference in Makurdi, Benue State.  He said that the LCG has been introduced by WHO following extensive review of the partograph. The LCG maintains some aspects of the partograph while discarding others without scientific evidence backing, including the dogmatic 1cm per hour cervical dilatation rate. In its place, an evidence-based time limit for each centimeter of cervical dilatation has been included. The tool also significantly makes provisions for documentation of aspects of respectful maternity care and shared decision making.

Presenting the report of the Committee earlier set up by the National executive Council of SOGON on LCG, he related that the committee found the tool to be simple and adaptable in Nigeria, and urged SOGON to take charge of the necessary change by domesticating the instrument, training and training of care providers , commissioning a local study comparing the tool with the WHO partograph for more local content as well as liaising with the postgraduate colleges to introduce LCG as an examination feature.
