A delegation of the Eastern sector SOGON led by the chairman paid a courtesy call on one of the elders of the profession, Dr. Hyacinth U. Akanwa in his country home in Owerri, the capital of Imo State on the 11th of March 2022. The visit which was part of the Eastern sector first quarter meeting for 2022 also included the Vice chairman, Prof. Mabel Ekot, the secretary, Dr. Emily Nzeribe, the Imo state coordinator, Dr. Adanna Egwim and other members of the state executive council.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman thanked Dr. Ukanwa for his warm reception and hospitality having received the guests with the traditional Igbo kolanut presentation amongst others. He explained that the sector undertakes to visit the elders of the society to pay homage and due respect to them for their trail blazing contributions to the profession with regards to teaching, training and services for the promotion of women’s health locally, nationally and globally. The secretary, who incidentally was also a beneficiary of Dr. Akanwa’s tutelage poured encomiums on him and expressed deep gratitude on behalf of herself and others for all he has done for them and the profession. The Vice chairman and Imo state coordinator similarly extolled the virtues of the elder.
Responding, the octogenarian expressed his extreme joy for such an occasion and relished the honour accorded him by the society which they had toiled for in their days. He stated that he has followed the development and activities of SOGON over time and urged the leadership to keep the current on. The octogenarian who is still active in practice, shared his experiences in the profession over time with the delegation, as well as shared images of his recent surgical experiences of interest.
Before leaving, the Exco presented him with a beautiful plaque of gratitude and some other gifts.
